SCOPE

Architecture, Interior

K-Thengono Design Studio has designed a family residence in Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, characterized by its sculptural composition of smooth, flowing curves. Embedded within this fluid form is a dynamic arrangement of living spaces and outdoor areas, bridged by elevated corridors and staircases.

Front Facade

Situated between two existing houses, the site is organized into two three-story volumes, separated by a courtyard and a backyard, to optimize natural light and ventilation. The front structure shifts as it rises, providing shade for the lower levels. In contrast, the rear structure tapers upward, creating terraces at each level.

The ground floor houses service areas and support spaces, including a gym and a guest bedroom, arranged around the central courtyard. The upper floors are organized with a clear separation between private and shared spaces. In the front volume, the main and children's bedrooms are positioned along the street-facing facade, while the communal areas, such as the children's playroom and the family room, face the opposite side. The rear volume is dedicated to communal functions, boasting a living room, office, and library.

One bridge links the front entrance and children’s playroom to the living room in the rear volume. Another bridge with a staircase connects the living room to the family room one level up in the front volume. A final bridge, serving as a lounge, connects the family room to the office and library, with access to a terrace and outdoor stairs leading to a rooftop bar on top of the front volume.

Internally, these twisted bridges articulate the spatial hierarchy of the house. Their twisting forms influence how spaces are experienced as residents move from one volume to another, with their curvature facilitating a continuous flow and visual connection.

A defining feature of the residence is the series of twisted bridges connecting communal spaces across the two volumes and different levels.

Externally, the twisted curves break the rigidity of the building’s volumes, making the bridges appear as an integral part of the structure rather than an added element. To maintain cohesiveness and fluidity, the material choices are kept minimal. The glass facade is wrapped in wooden slats, which provide privacy while allowing filtered light. Charred on the front and finished naturally on the sides, the slats create a gradient effect. The bridges are clad in the same gradient wood panels, with metal framing accentuating the building's sculptural quality.
