Located in a bustling commercial district in South Jakarta, Indonesia, Light Box in Between is a three-floors-high commercial building.

Light Box in Between is a three-story building in the commercially robust area of South Jakarta, Indonesia. A strategic location that urges for a design that seeks great flexibility and openness, where the spaces could host any possible retail scenarios to attract distinct tenants to come in.

The project aims to create a fully integrated architecture with the current existing conditions that maximizes the lot’s buildable area, as well as maintaining a captivating architectural standard inside and out. For this purpose, we designed a steel mass that is lifted and clamped between two distinguished concrete service core. The front core serves as vertical circulations, and the back core accommodates for back-end service programs such as: the kitchen, storage, and bathrooms.

One of the project’s most distinctive feature is a cantilevered volume floating above as a roof for the 1st floor and a terrace for the 3rd floor. The cantilevered mass is cladded with a double skin system of poly carbonate material with an illuminating strip of light fitted in-between. Combining the frosting property of the skin system & the strip lighting, they create a shadowing silhouettes of people or objects moving within the space. Casting a dynamic and intriguing “wayang” performance from the street level at night that shrouds the building’s exterior.

To further emphasize cantilevered storefront, the 1st & 3rd floor is enclosed within a frameless glass for a complete transparency that blurs the boundary between indoor & outdoor. Nested underneath is a continuous urban carpet that connects the streets to the 1st level of the building, designated as an FnB business. This commercial building is accommodated with a semi-basement level as an extension parking to the ground level.

In Jakarta, buildings are getting taller and the human population is rapidly increasing.

But there is less development of green space compare to its cityscape. Results in poor air quality which brings unhealthy lifestyle to the citizens. The vision of the project is to introduce a role model that gives a new opportunity for any existing buildings in Jakarta to develop an elevated rooftop garden that brings the natural elements back to the city. The nature that provides an ecosystem to help clean air pollution. And this is exactly what we did for Noru, a rooftop lounge garden .

The design embraces the panoramic skyline by using overlapping- overhead planes. Which act as a shelter from the rain and protecting the over exposure during the day. While the different elevations still allow daylight to bounce into the semi-outdoor space. The topographical platforms compromise the aesthetic appearance of the overhead planes, but also help to define seating typologies. Together with natural stone, wood, plants, and big sized trees over custom planters to complete the elevated garden as a whole.

Multikom is one of the most competitive distributor of gadgets in Palembang, Indonesia. The structural objective is to house showrooms and private offices.

The programmatic distribution is deployed sectionally. Parking is located in the first floor for easy access. The second and third floor is for the showrooms, where streetscape is extended to the interior by an undulating surface that serves as a connector. This transitions between exterior and interior is treated in a natural and cohesive. Material usage is considered for both the outside and inside as one. Giving leverage for, the private offices on the top floor from the loud noises off the busy street.

The architecture focuses in developing a small scale building that have freedom to expand further and to merge with the neighboring buildings.Instead of building a monolithic 5 stories tower, the new structure is a series of stacked slanted boxes, stepping to the 5th story like a terrace, creating a friendly appearance from the street. 

This typology allows the passage of unobstructed natural daylight to the interior space. The stepping effect results in genuine outdoor spaces, allowing office workers to engage with the urban gardens. As the volume is stepping up, they are sliced both horizontally & vertically and equipped with a translucent glass, resulting in a 3 separated structure appearance  from the outside, but connected internally.

PAPA & MAMA BISTRO AND COFFEE  |  Jakarta, INA

The new Papa & Mama Bistro and Coffee outlet is located in a new developed area as an extension of Pantai Indah Kapuk, where people often travel to this new area to expose to outdoor for urban getaway.

Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by a masculine atmosphere with darker tone material and wood paneling to accentuate the color tone and aesthetic of pastries and cakes. A bold character of an interior space that direct focuses to the delicacies of the pastries, where interior design acts as a canvas for their products.

The ground floor is catered for bakery and coffee with the “Grab and Go” concept, a granite bench is designed as a waiting area for a quick stopover for customers. Nearby the entrance is rows of display shelving connected to the floor and ceiling shadowing to the subtle textured ribbed wall in the background. Contrasting with a continuous curve and textured material to highlight the bar as the centerpiece extending as a railing function for the stairs leading customers to the second floor seating area.

With the concept of urban getaway, the second floor comforts visitors with a calming atmosphere through natural elements of timber, pebbles and plants featuring with warm lighting. Through introducing two seating types in the second floor, it allows options of the occupancy duration with the level of comfortability.

The modern tech office consists of a range of work patterns and activities, each of which should correspond to an optimal office design setting.

Personnel can experience different work modes including ways of working individually, collaboratively, and educationally. In Re-Configuration, we were challenged to design a compact office space that reconfigures, allowing different activities and usage to take place on a daily basis. 

Starting from the entrance, we peel off surfaces to install LED lights to create a sense of inviting. This interstitial space directs the tenants to an open space where we could fit 18 people at the workstation.  On the same spot, we designed a multifunctional built-in cabinet that could bring flexibility in this dynamic environment. 

Rather than just having a normal pantry, a table hidden under the countertop pulls out to accommodate a lunch space. Modular seating is embedded within this table which could also be used as a presentation space when sliding glass doors are brought to the center. Overhead cabinets allow an attached projector to transform the pantry into a screening room. Functionality is key to the various design strategies, making every piece of furniture as efficient as possible for multiple uses.

Driven by a complex form that produces a performative, curvilinear geometry — producing a supple shape that is able to respond equally to the selected site, the program, and a particular maker culture centered around it.

Organic forms can often generate residual or left over spaces. 

Skateboarding has a very similar mutual ethic, an ethic of seeking of unintentional moment where random things started to be eligible for the skateboarders, reconstructing the idea of form and the shape of the rider. They are unlike the typical pedestrian; they inhabit in a different way. He or she is alive to the possibility of space, not in its totality, as an architect would be. But as a collection of tactile surfaces to be jumped on, grinded, and conquered. 

Conventional Architecture is often a product of extruded  boxes, producing monotonous space. This project introduces a new typology for maker space – a building that creates an iconic identity that contributes urbanistically as part of the surrounding fabric. The building form turns the idea of a conventional atrium upside down, with a volumetric perturbation that brings the dynamics of daylight and air through the heart of the building. The end form  accommodates the hybridized program of skateboard manufacture plus skateboard park in one facility. As such, the building’s space and form synthesizes together both introverted and extroverted spatial conditions. Housing the makers, the riders and the visitors to experience this dynamic interplay.

NEST AT SCRIBE | Sonoma, CA

Reemphasizing the local spirit of Scribe Winery city of Sonoma California, Nest at Scribe serves as a place for visitors to discover a new point of collective central destination that takes consideration of three-dimensional spatial network using grid organization.

To create engaging qualities that are very much in touch with nature.

The project is designed using wooden frame structure that resembles a Japanese larch forest. Larch timber columns are anchored in the mat foundation to provide the building’s primary structural support. 

Each column is a composite of four 6×6 glulam timbers, held together by steel plates and bolts to create rigid moment connection.This allows the pavilion to float above the ground with volumes nested on the structure.
